What Kind Of Control Do You Actually Have Over Aging?

A new study of identical twins shows that the things we do in life and environmental factors have an undeniable effect on how fast or slowly our faces age. Researchers recruited nearly 200 sets of identical twins who were visiting the annual twin festival in Twinsburg, Ohio.
Twin research is especially useful in the study of aging because twins are genetically coded’’ to grow old the identical way, said study author Dr. Bahman Guyuron, chairman of the department of plastic surgery at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University. As a result, any perceived differences in appearance among twins can give clues as to what environmental and lifestyle factors can strongly influence aging, he said.
We needed to research the factors that may speed up growing old,’’ Dr. Guyuron said. What are the things we can control? By changing your lifestyle behaviors, can you control part of growing old that would otherwise be speeded up?’’
Using still photographs of each twin set, the researchers asked an independent panel to mark differences in each twin’s appearance and whether one twin looked older than the other. They found many factors influenced facial aging, including sun exposure and smoking. Based on the assessment, 10 years of smoking added about 2.5 extra years of aging to a twin’s face, compared to a twin who did not smoke. Sun exposure, particularly among those who spent more time outside playing golf or tennis, also increased the appearance of aging.
Stress also appeared to be a factor in looking older. Divorced twins appeared, on average, at least two years older than a twin who was married or widowed.
It also appeared as though antidepressant use was also associated with an older look. Researchers said it’s possible that depression itself increased facial aging, or it’s possible that use of antidepressant drugs relaxed facial muscles and increased the appearance of aging.
The researchers also found a shocking comparison between facial aging and body weight. A heavier body weight before the age of 40 was associated with an older look. But, in the women over 40, a heavier body mass index was associated with a more youthful look, compared to a thinner twin.
Excessive loss of weight can be detrimental to youthfulness and attractiveness,’’ Dr. Guyuron said. It’s a warning if you lose too much weight after the age of 40.’’
The discoveries were published online in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. All of the twins researched were women. Dr. Guyuron said future research will study male twin sets to determine what factors influence a man’s facial aging.
Natural Remedies For Symptoms Of Menopause

Menopause marks the end of menstruation and a woman’s reproductive years. There is no definitive age at which this occurs. On average, it tends to happen around the age of 51, but that is by no means a hard and fast rule.
When a woman enters the perimenopause stage of her life, her monthly periods become irregular and start getting further apart. For some women, this can last for years, for other it’s a short process. Generally, a woman is considered post-menopausal after she’s been without a period for 12 consecutive months.
The symptoms of menopause include irregular periods, hot flashes, disturbed sleep, night sweats, emotional distress, vaginal dryness, dry skin, weight gain and a decreased libido.
To alleviate the symptoms of menopause, most treatments focus on adjusting hormone levels and introducing lifestyle changes. These can both help limit the physical and emotional impact that menopause has on many women’s lives.
But consider some of the following natural remedies for menopause symptoms.
Black Cohosh
Black cohosh is remarkably effective at reducing a number of menopausal symptoms. It can help with everything from hot flashes and insomnia to anxiety and mood fluctuations. It’s also an anti-inflammatory and mild sedative, meaning it can help alleviate high blood pressure and anxiety.
Black cohosh has been proven to help alleviate menopausal annoyances in multiple clinical studies. It’s even been shown to be just as effective as small estrogen doses but without the side effects, like thickening of the uterine lining. However, women with a history of breast cancer in their family should not take black cohosh.
Dong Quai Herb
Dong Quai is typically administered in liquid form or as part of a tea. It’s commonly used to regulate hormone levels and reduce the common symptoms associated with menopause. It’s not recommended for those who are also taking anti-coagulant drugs.
Liver and Adrenal Tonic
Because adrenal and liver stress exacerbates the symptoms of menopause, combine equal parts of the following herbs to support adrenal function and repair and detoxify the liver: licorice, wild yam, Dong Quai, black cohosh, milk thistle, burdock and bupleurum. Add cinnamon and spearmint for flavor and then boil 1 tbsp for every cup of water and drink three times a day.
These natural remedies for menopause aren’t going to “cure” your menopause, but they will help you deal with the uncomfortable symptoms associated with this important life change. In addition to these herbal remedies, you can make a big difference by focusing on developing a very healthy diet and the amount of daily exercise that you’re getting.
What Is Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease is a disease of the brain and not a mental illness. It is a medical condition which as such, responds to medication and non-medicated approaches to relieving the symptoms and even stalling the progression of Alzheimers.
Alzheimer’s disease disease can act differently in different patients. Some experience a slow progression of the disease and others may watch as their loved ones goes rapidly through the stages of the disease, seemingly changing right before their eyes.
The same treatments for Alzheimer’s disease may not always have the same result or work for the same amount of time for different people.
It doesn’t make sense to argue with or try to reason with someone suffering from Alzheimer’s because in order for the individual with Alzheimer’s to argue or reason back they would have to be able to understand, remember and process what is being said and this is just not possible.
To make life easier for the patient in the early or middle stages of the disease break up tasks into smaller steps so that the entire task will not seem quite as overwhelming to them.
We all tend to “temporarily” forget things from time to time. When these “senior moments” change from being only a nuisance to perhaps something more serious is when they start to interfere in your daily life. If this happens then those moments may be something more serious such as a manifestation of Alzheimer’s symptoms.
The Real Truths In Connection With Acne Everyone Should Understand

For many years acne has been the terror of many a teenagers life, and, of which, the subject matter, is not readily discussed. People who are afflicted with acne have been remorselessly teased and tormented, and horrifically christened with a name such as acne face. Only those who have actually suffered from acne can truly understand how enormously damaging such name throwing can really be. Over the years great enigmas have unveiled themselves in the symptoms and causes of acne which have also aided the formulation of effective acne treatments.
Acne is the name of an inflammatory disease of the skin often presenting itself in teenagers. It reveals itself in the excess production of oil by the sebaceous glands which eventually become blocked. It can alter the processes in the pores and follicles in the skin of the face, back and arms but also including that of the chest. The blocked pores and follicles are medically labeled as comedo.
The comedone are the blockages in the pores which is a substance consisisting of keratin and sebum. A comedo can be either closed or open. An open comedo is what most people call a ‘blackhead’, whereas the closed comedo is what most people call a ‘whitehead’.
Once a comedone has formed it is usually followed by the most noticeable and unpleasant symptom of acne – spots. First the comedone becomes infected and with this comes redness and inflammation of the skin, which then leads to an outbreak of pimples. The spots often become filled with pus and the skin surrounding the spot looks incredibly red and is sore to the touch.
There are two types of bacteria responsible for the infection and inflammation in acne, these are called Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes. As well as being responsible for the formation of pus filled pimples, acne cysts and abcesses can develop.
Acne cures and treatments: Incredibly our Scientists have made incredible advances in the comprehension of the processes involved in the formation of, and the management of, acne. Sadly there has little or no increase in the comprehension of why acne occurs. Today, it is almost globally accepted that a variety of factors, for example diet, stress and hormone levels can all play a role in the development of acne.
Some scientist believe that a person may, or may not, have a genetic predisposition to the formation of acne but this requires much more research. Even if they do not manage to find the exact causes we can be certain that the increased understanding of the disease will help in the creation of new treatments. It is an unusual fact that, usually, when a single scientific discovery is revealed it has a knock on effect upon other research and often further important discoveries are made sometimes in an unrelated scientific field.
Adjusting To Elderly Parents

Parents do an amazing amount of work for their children to ensure that they grow up to be healthy and well-balanced individuals. As one makes the transition into adulthood, they begin to realize the extent that their parents worked, as well as how they can finally have the opportunity to give back.
There are certain things you should do to improve the quality of life you have as a family. There are many practices you should avoid in order to become more useful for your family by bringing all the members of the family closer. Parenting is a full time responsibility. When you have kids you have lots of responsibilities which you are supposed to complete. If you have elderly parents but they still are alive, living with them in the same house may become a problem for some people. We must understand how we can adjust to our parents if they are old and we still live together.
In different parts of the world there are different trends. In some parts of the world the kids live with their parents and the paternal family of the kids. In this situation the kids are generally used to having their grandparents around. On the other hand in some cultures the kids leave the house of their parents when they become able to earn for themselves. Now these people are not used to having their parents around all the time. When your parents grow old, it is your responsibility to give them all the love and care that they gave you when you were young. These are the people who have loved you selflessly. They always knew that you will leave them in quest of a career and a spouse, but they still loved you unconditionally.
When the parents are old it is the responsibility of the children to take care of them. Sending your parents to a nursing home just because they have grown old is not the solution. People must learn to respect the old age of their parents. The old people should be given all the due respect and importance and above all, their children must spend time with their old parents. Now that the parents have grown old they are not any more in the position to do simple things for themselves. You must learn to be there for them. They have listened to all your demands when you were young and they have provided for you all your life before you started earning for yourself. You must now pay them back in the same currency, love. Give them all due importance. Give them your time.
Generally the kids are very close to their grandparents. The grandparents are loving for them. They have more time for them. Thus the kids feel more comfortable with their grandparents. This is very healthy. The family ties become stronger in this way.
One should learn to be patient with their parents when they grow old. The parents in old age may sometime act unreasonably and they may not be reasonable and understanding. It now is the duty of the children to be patient and bear everything. This is the right we should give to our parents, as long as it is within our realm of capability.
Antioxidants And How To Improve Your Body And Mind With Brain Training?

The human body is involved in a multitude of chemical reactions and other processes every day to keep everything functioning properly. To prevent this system from breaking down, the body requires certain nutrients that it cannot produce on its own. Antioxidants are chemicals that slow down or prevent the oxidation, within living cells in the human body, that is caused by free radicals. Oxidation, which involves adding oxygen to a chemical reaction within a cell, may sound benign. While humans need oxygen to survive, the effect of excess oxidation within cells is damaging and potentially cancer causing. It causes the normal functioning of the cells to break down and deteriorate, which in turn affects any neighboring cells as well.
This is why the effects of free radical damage, such as cancer, are known to spread so quickly from one area in the body to another. When a cell is destroyed by a free radical it turns on the body and destroys healthy cells. Cells which become cancerous may need to be surgically removed to prevent further spread of the disease. Scientists studying the disease are very interested in the cancer fighting properties of antioxidants because of their value as a preventative measure as well as their potential for leading to a cure. As we gain deeper understanding of how cancer is caused and how to prevent it, scientists hope to discover better ways to eradicate it.
Where Are They Found?
These amazing chemicals are present in foods we eat every day, making it easy to incorporate them into even the busiest lifestyle. Antioxidant chemicals found in fruits, vegetables, certain teas and even some kinds of chocolate are crucial to a healthy diet in order to prevent the aforementioned damage from occurring. Fruits and vegetables contain the most nutrients when they are fresh, so it is best to eat them raw to attain the most benefit.
Fruits, which are favored for their sweetness, are commonly eaten this way as a snack or a garnish on a dessert. Fresh fruits can even be blended into a smoothie for an antioxidant rich, but delicious, beverage. However, it is understandable that many people may not find preparing vegetables the same way very appetizing. Luckily there are other options for preparing them without destroying their nutritional benefits. Vegetables will still retain many of their antioxidant properties if they are steamed or boiled, but may be slightly less effective.
How do we combine Antioxidant treatment with Brain Training?
Simply eat the right foods and increase the blood flow to the brain (thus your neurons) while performing
free Brain Training exercises, which improve your mind and overall sharpness of your brain.

Aging is inevitable, but there are steps you can take to slow the aging process that are more natural than the use of anti-wrinkle creams, Botox, or even plastic surgery.
For five simple changes you can make to keep yourself young, keep reading.
1. Drink Lots of Water
Water helps keep our bodies hydrated, functioning and clean. It flushes out toxins, increases circulation, improves digestion, revitalizes cell growth and helps us maintain a healthy weight.
Just as our skin needs moisture to stay fresh, our bodies need water to stay young, strong and operating at prime capacity. Ideally, you should be drinking 8 glasses of water a day.
2. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is a body’s time to rejuvenate and repair itself. You know that after a night with little sleep, you have circles under your eyes, your skin looks shallow, you don’t feel well and your eyes are bloodshot. Anything that can age you so quickly in a few hours can’t be good in the long-term.
So, getting enough sleep every night is one of your best weapons against the aging process. Shoot for at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night and avoid drinking caffeine less than 5 hours before bedtime.
3. Eat a Well Balanced Diet
Eating a healthy diet can keep your digestive system working properly and your body well-fueled to fight off disease and aging-causing free radicals. Stock up on foods like pomegranates, blueberries, dark green vegetables, beans and legumes.
Also, foods that are high in Vitamins A and C, like citrus fruits, are great for your skin and can help boost the production of collagen, the fiber that keeps your skin smooth and soft.
4. Cut Down On Stress
Stress is a major factor in the aging process and can lead to prematurely grey hair, a depleted immune system, facial expression wrinkles and even poor skin tone. So to slow down aging, reduce your stress level by cutting back o your work hours, avoiding rush hour traffic, limiting your responsibilities, delegating tasks and taking at least ten minutes out of every day for meditation and reflection.
5. Stay on Top of Mental Exercise
Slowing down the aging process isn’t just about fighting wrinkles, but it’s also about maintaining a young and healthy mind.
Research has shown that individuals who did daily puzzles and mental exercises were 30 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease later in life. So, stay young with a daily book or crossword puzzle.
Aging itself is inevitable. But the appearance and effects of aging can be reduced with proper care of your body and skin.

When we hit 50 we begin to notice that the person we look at in the mirror everyday is not the same person that we are used to viewing. Things are evolving at a higher rate of change than they used to and they are changing for the worse. It’s so tempting to try new things, like hormonal therapy, which are supposed to turn back our clocks.
