Every day 5.9 billion people use salt.
Annual production has grown from 10 million tons to 200 million tons, and although over 90% of that salt is used for industrializedindustrial purposes that still leaves 20 million tons of human salt consumption.
Sodium Chloride, the salt we think of as table salt, is actually only 97.5% sodium chloride. The other 2.5 % is chemicals to “enhance our wellbeing” and keep salt from clumping: Iodine (sodium iodite, idolate or potassium iodide) is added to reduce the chance of iodine deficiency which can lead to thyroid problems.
Flouride is sometimes added to salt, especially in France, and another health supplement that is sometimes added is folic acid.
