Dandruff, also called seborrheic dermatitis is an itchy, flaky and persistent skin disorder of the scalp, without redness. It results when the scalp sheds dead skin cells in large numbers. Dandruff appears as dry, white or greyish flakes usually on the top of the head.It is normal to continuously shed some dead skin flakes, as the skin is constantly renewing itself. With dandruff, this whole process of skin renewal speeds up, so a greater number of dead cells get shed. In addition, the cells are shed in clumps, which are big enough to be seen with the naked eye as embarrassing flakes. The scalp may also feel slightly itchy.Dandruff is a very common problem and 90% of the people around the world ail from it at some point in their lives. It can occur at any age, but is most likely in the early 20s. When it occurs in newborns and infants, dandruff is termed as cradle cap.

The dandruff is caused by yeasts like Malassezia Globosa or Pityrosporum Ovale that like the oil-secreting glands around hair follicles. These yeast funguses feed on the oil (sebum) secreted from the glands and clog the pores on your scalp. Some people are sensitive to that yeast, and it irritates their skin, which tries to get rid of the fungus by flaking, resulting in dandruff.
Seborrheic dermatitis. Areas of your skin that produce more oil can be susceptible to this condition. Your scalp may be one of these areas, should your skin be red, very oily, and have flaky scales that are either yellow or white. Double check with your dermatologist to find out if this is what is causing your dandruff.Psoriasis. Though psoriasis usually affects your elbows, knees, and torso, depending upon the type that you have, it may also affect other various areas. An overproduction of skin cells leads to silvery white flakes that collect in certain areas, and in this case, your scalp.Contact dermatitis. Frequently dyeing your hair or using certain hair products may actually be leaving your scalp itchy and flaking. Home Remedies For Dandruff:Apple Cider Vinegar has been used for centuries as an old folk remedy to successfully get rid of dandruff. The great thing about this remedy is the acidity of the vinegar helps to stabilize the pH balance of the scalp and kills the fungus. Try this recipe below and see how you go:1) Thoroughly wash your hair with a mild, pH-balanced shampoo. There’s no need to use a dandruff shampoo as the apple cider vinegar will gradually get rid of the dandruff problem.2) Mix a two-to-one ratio of apple cider vinegar and warm water (two vinegar to one water). If you want to cleanse and condition your scalp further and add a fragrance to your hair then you can always a couple of drops of essential oils such as lavender or rosemary – both excellent for getting rid of itchy scalps and dandruff. (Always patch test oils for allergies, and always consult your doctor if you are pregnant).
